چکیده

In the present paper strong{monotonic, monotonic and weak{monotonic reasoning is studied in the context of algorithmic language learning theory from positive as well as from positive and negative data. Strong{monotonicity describes the requirement to only produce better and better generalizations when more and more data are fed to the inference device. Monotonic learning re ects the eventual interplay between generalization and restriction during the process of inferring a language. However, it is demanded that for any two hypotheses the one output later has to be at least as good as the previously produced one with respect to the language to be learnt. Weak{monotonicity is the analogue of cumulativity in learning theory. We relate all these notions one to the other as well as to previously studied modes of identi cation, thereby in particular obtaining a strong hierarchy.

Non-Monotonic Sentence Alignment via Semisupervised Learning

This paper studies the problem of nonmonotonic sentence alignment, motivated by the observation that coupled sentences in real bitexts do not necessarily occur monotonically, and proposes a semisupervised learning approach based on two assumptions: (1) sentences with high affinity in one language tend to have their counterparts with similar relatedness in the other; and (2) initial alignment is...

An S4F-related Monotonic Modal Logic

This paper introduces a novel monotonic modal logic, allowing us to capture the nonmonotonic variant of the modal logic S4F: we add a second new modal operator into the original language of S4F, and show that the resulting formalism is strong enough to characterise the logical consequence of (nonmonotonic) S4F, as well as its minimal model semantics. The latter underlies major forms of nonmonot...

Nonmonotonic Reasoning, Argumentation and Machine Learning

Machine learning and nonmonotonic reasoning are closely related, both concerned with making plausible as well as certain inferences based on available data. In this document a brief overview of diierent approaches to nonmonotonic reasoning is presented , and it is shown how the concept of argumentation systems arises. The relationship with machine learning work is also discussed. The document a...

Nonmonotonic Onto-Relational Learning

In this paper we carry on the work on Onto-Relational Learning by investigating the impact of having disjunctive Datalog with default negation either in the language of hypotheses or in the language for the background theory. The inclusion of nonmonotonic features strengthens the ability of our ILP framework to deal with incomplete knowledge by performing some form of commonsense reasoning. One...
